Why Chinese Mothers Are Crazy

Amy Chua’s provocative piece in the Wall Street Journal has stirred up considerable debate, and rightly so.  Her strict, even draconian, method of parenting is one that many parents will recognize, though perhaps in diluted form.  She outlines the steps that she, a proud Chinese mother, took to ensure her children’s success.  She doesn’t allow her children to attend sleepovers or playdates, to watch TV or play computer games.  In a tautological flourish she says they are not allowed to “play any instrument other than the piano or violin” or “not play the piano or violin.”  All the while she examines the difference between so-called “Chinese mothers” and “Western parents,” clearly favoring the former.  But while she presents her regimen with confidence and pride, she neglects to examine the drawbacks of such austere parenting.

Playground Politics

A 10-year-old Arkansas boy named Will Phillips has refused to stand up in class and recite the pledge of allegiance as he feels that gays are not allowed to get married and are not included as part of a nation that provides ”liberty and justice for all.” My first instinct: well done, young sir! I commend your brave and principled political stand against the forces of evil. More people should be sticking up for the oppressed, especially in the so-called “Land of the Free.”

Then I read on.

I Hate Fat Kids

I hate Fat Kids. I simply do. Fat kids and their parents. Normally, I’m not this vitriolic. In fact, I pride myself on being an even-tempered and well-centered individual with no strong likes or dislikes. But I absolutely despise fat kids and their parents. I used to be one. I was chubby as a child, and obese as a teenager. Even now, after years of dieting and exercise, I still have a gut that troubles me. I look better now, but that doesn’t lessen my ire. I could be a little more specific: I hate spoiled fat kids. I hate spoiled fat kids whose parents indulge their every whim. I hate spoiled fat kids whose parents indulge their every whim and are proud of it. Unfortunately, despite the specific nature of my hatred, I’m in a country that is chock full of them.
